Where else can I find freshtown farm produce?
You can also find our produce at the Westgate Farmers Market. We will be there 2 times a month from June-October. If you are a member of the Westgate community and would like to pick up your boxes at the farmer’s market, get in touch with us and we can work something out!
How do I purchase my share?
You can purchase your share via check, cash or through our this link for our Square-Based Online Store. We would prefer if you mailed us a check payable to Freshtown Farm. This saves us 3% per transaction and every little bit adds up! Please mail your check to 326 E Gates St, Columbus, OH 43206.
What is in a CSA box?
You can expect 6-10 different varieties of vegetables in each of your boxes. The quantities you can expect vary with each vegetable and with each part of the season. You will get more vegetables in the deep summer and early fall than you will right at the beginning of the growing season. We strive and plan for consistency, but given the unknowns of weather we need you to be flexible with your expectations. Most vegetables will come in bunches big enough to serve one dish for 4 people or one dish for 2 people if you are heavy vegetable eaters. Here is an example box to give you a bit more of a concrete idea:
- Carrots 1 bunch (6-8 in a bunch)
- Kale 1 bunch (8-12 in a bunch)
- Cucumbers (2)
- Salad Mix (1/2 pound)
- Parsley 1 bunch (bunch size of a quarter at the stems)
- Sweet Peppers (3-6)
- Fennel (1-2 bulbs)
- Slicer Tomatoes (2-5)
When does the CSA Begin?
- Summer: June 4 – August 20
- Fall: August 27 – November 12
- Full Season: June 4 – November 12
- Thanksgiving Box: Week of November 19
Do I need to pay all at once?
No. You can make as many payments as you would like leading up to June 4th for the summer & full shares, August 27th for the fall share and November 19th for the Thanksgiving Box. We will need $50 to hold your spot.
How much does each box cost?
$25 per box.
What if I go on vacation?
If you go on vacation let us know! You can either give your box to a friend/neighbor/family member or donate the vegetables and eggs from your box to our weekly donation-based farm stand located at our Urban Pocket Farm on Fridays.
Do I get to pick what I want in the box each week?
No. We spend the winter making the growing schedule. We have a very clear idea of what you will receive weekly. We have spent a lot of time collecting surveys and reviewing national trends which help us to come up with a box mix that has both vegetables you know and love with a sprinkling of specialty vegetables. If you get something you do not like you can always give it to a friend!
If you are picking up at our urban pocket farm, then you will have more of a farmers market style experience and will be offered a little more choice. You will also have the option of you-pick on site.
Will I know what is in my box prior to receiving it?
You will receive an email Thursday, before your Monday delivery, or Monday before your Wednesday pick-up, with a list for the week. You will also receive a recipe, some storage information and news about what is going down on the farms.
What if I forgot to pick up my box at the Urban Pocket Farm or the Westgate Farmers Market? Can I still get it?
Get in contact with us at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you realize you forgot and we can work something out!
What are the risks of joining a CSA?
As a member, you share in the abundance of our harvest, as well as in the risks that comes with farming. We have learned how to work around most problems, but it is likely that in any given year we may lose a crop to drought, flooding, disease, bugs, hail, or other acts of nature. This may mean that you will not receive that particular affected crop for that season.
What if I don’t eat all of the food in my share?
You can put your uneaten veggie scraps in the compost bucket provided. We will give the scraps to the chickens and compost pile. This will provide food and fertility for your next seasons veggies and eggs. Not eating all of the veggies in your box can seem like a waste of food and you may feel guilty about it. We want to encourage you to expect that no matter how great you are at eating veggies, you will almost certainly compost a certain portion of your share this summer and fall.
If you find that it’s happening a lot, we encourage you to find friends or neighbors to share your box with. We plan to send ideas for storage, freezing, and directly consuming your produce, each week to help mitigate this issue.
What can I put in the compost bucket?
You can put more than just your leftover CSA items in the compost bucket (in fact our chickens and our soil will thank you!), but it is also important to know what to avoid. The simple rule is no meat, oils or dairy. Welcome items include leftover veggies and trimmings, fruit and peels, stale bread, paper towels (unless they are grease soaked), coffee grounds and filters. If you have a specific item you’re wondering about, drop us a line and ask.
How often will you collect the compost bucket?
For Home Delivery Subscribers:
We will collect you bucket each week and drop a new clean on with your box on Monday’s. Simply leave your bucket outside your front door!
For Urban Pocket Farm Pick-Up:
We will collect your buckets each week at the urban pocket farm pick-up day and have a fresh bucket for you to take back home with you. Simply bring your bucket along with you!
How much will I be charged if I do not return a CSA box or Compost Bucket?
There is a $12 fee for a CSA box that is not returned and a $7 fee for a compost bucket that is not returned. Please return the CSA boxes and compost buckets even if they are damaged. They are incredibly important materials for our operation and cost us quite a bit of money to replace.
Do I have to compost to be a part of the CSA?
No way! We just want to offer the option to whomever wants it.
If you are for any reason dissatisfied with your membership and wish to cancel, we offer a money-back guarantee for your remaining boxes. If you have to move out of the area and cannot continue your share, please communicate this as early as you can. We will arrange a refund on a pro-rated basis.
